He served as director of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies before his appointment to his current position at the Agency for Cultural Affalrs.He studied at the Jung Institute in Switzerland, and became the first Japanese to be qualified as Jungian analyst. His contributions extend across the fields of education, politics and culture from the perspective of a clinical psychologist. His extensive written works include "Buddhism and the Art of psychotherapy".
